Tracking Codes

Updated on

Overview

CompleteEmpire utilises a Tracking Code system to link campaigns & events to opportunities, giving you a clear view of campaign effectiveness.

Tracking codes are values (query strings) added to website links (URLs) giving the targeted web page extra information about the link, its origin & purpose.

Tracking Codes are commonly used by services such as Google Analytics.

See https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1033863 for documentation on Google Analytics Tracking Codes.

CompleteEmpire tracking codes use the following format: ?ce_code=[tracking code] and can be used in conjunction with other codes to fully track your links.

By utilising both the CompleteEmpire and Google Analytics tracking codes you will be able to track all clicks, page views and enquiries/opportunities coming both to and through your front end websites.

Implementation

The CompleteEmpire Tracking Codes can generated and added to your campaigns using the Marketing module accessed from the Main Menu.

Initially a Marketing Campaign must be created in which to add the tracking codes. Then the individual codes are added with each assigned their own ‘Source’ & ‘Source Origin’. Next the Tracking Code is either selected in a campaign or event, or copied into a Facebook or website link. Refer to Creating and Editing a Marketing Campaign

Here is an example of a Marketing Campaign with multiple tracking codes:

You have an upcoming event, you need to send out your invites via Facebook, email and an external website.

You create a marketing campaign called ‘Upcoming Event’ you create 3 tracking codes, one for each source.

You add the tracking codes to your campaign, event & Facebook post.

As your audience registers for the event you are able to see which source they came from.

Example of full URL with both CompleteEmpire and Google Analytics tracking codes.

When the email campaign is sent the Tracking codes will automatically be added to each hyperlink in your email that points to a site that has CompleteEmpire plugins enabled, thus the Source and Source Origin will be set by the tracking code when an enquiry/opportunity form is submitted.

Google Analytics

The CompleteEmpire tracking codes can be captured into Google Analytics (GA) as an event and also stripped off the displayed URL for cleaner viewing in GA. Follow the instructions below to achieve this result.

1. Add the ce_code variable as a Custom Dimension In GA:

In your GA console navigate to: Admin / Property / Custom Definitions / Custom Dimensions.

Create a New Custom Dimension with the following attributes and make it active.

Name: ce_code

Scope: session

Once saved take note of the Index row number which will be used to replace ‘1’ in the ‘dimension1’ below.

2. Capture the ce_code from the page URL as each user views your website and pass it to GA. Below is an example of how to extend the GA script in the <head> section of your pages to achieve this:

3. Back in your Google Analytics Console navigate to: Admin / View / View Settings, and add: ce_code as text into the Exclude URL Query Parameters input box.

In GA as a result of these changes, you will gain Event data from each user who enters your site from a ce_code link, and also remove the ‘ce_code=#######’ characters from the individual page URLs so total usage can be tracked for individual URLs.
